About this book

The Literary, Devotional and Scholarly Legacy of Śrī Vidyāratnākara Tīrtha

Vidyāratnākara Darśana presents the profound literary, devotional and scholarly contributions of Śrī Vidyāratnākara Tīrtha Śrīpādangaḷavaru, a distinguished saint-scholar of the illustrious Śrī Vyāsarāja Maṭha tradition.

Renowned for his learning, spiritual discipline and profound detachment, Śrī Vidyāratnākara Tīrtha enriched both Sanskrit and Kannada literature through his stotras, kīrtanas and other literary compositions. His works reflect his mastery of poetry, Chandas-śāstra, music and the philosophical teachings of the Madhva tradition.

The present publication brings together his significant compositions and offers a glimpse into the depth and diversity of his literary heritage. His works are firmly rooted in the teachings of Jagadguru Śrī Madhvācārya and faithfully reflect the ideas presented in the Sarvamūla works.

Among his notable compositions are Raghuvaragītā, based on the account of Śrī Rāma presented in Śrī Madhvācārya’s Mahābhāratatātparyanirṇaya, and Sumadhvavijayasarasaṅgrahaḥ, which closely follows Śrī Nārāyaṇa Paṇḍitācārya’s Sumadhvavijaya. These works demonstrate his remarkable ability to distil extensive source material while preserving its essential meaning and, in several instances, its original expressions.

His Śrī Vyāsayatīśacitracaritam, an aṣṭaka devoted to Śrī Vyāsarāja Tīrtha, is especially noteworthy. It presents important events from the life of Śrī Vyāsarāja along with their chronological details, revealing Śrī Vidyāratnākara Tīrtha’s keen historical awareness and meticulous scholarship.

His Sanskrit and Kannada kīrtanas further reveal the depth of his devotion and his command of musical expression. His special devotion to Lord Narasiṃha of Nāmāgiri is reflected in his aṅkita, “Nāmāgiri Narasiṃha” and “Nāmāgiri Narahari,” which he employed not only in his kīrtanas but also in his stotra compositions.

The collection also includes Suprabhāta stotras, ārati compositions, maṅgala songs and other works suitable for daily devotional recitation. Together, these compositions represent a rich confluence of devotion, philosophy, poetry and music.

The works of Śrī Vidyāratnākara Tīrtha had previously been published twice by the Maṭha. The present edition marks their third publication, now undertaken by Śrī Vyāsatīrtha Saṃśodhana Pratiṣṭhānam, with a carefully revised and refined text. The edition also provides English translations of the Sanskrit stotras, enabling a wider audience to access and appreciate this important literary heritage.

The present work has been prepared with dedicated scholarly effort by Vidwan Kambaluru Sudarśanācārya. It is an endeavour to preserve, critically present and bring renewed attention to the invaluable compositions of Śrī Vidyāratnākara Tīrtha.

Vidyāratnākara Darśana is therefore not merely a collection of compositions; it is an invitation to discover the devotional vision, literary genius, philosophical commitment and musical sensibility of a remarkable saint-scholar of the Śrī Vyāsarāja Maṭha tradition.
