About this book

Aitareya Upaniṣad
A Kannada Translation of the Profound Teachings of the Ṛgveda Upaniṣad

The Aitareya Upaniṣad, belonging to the Ṛgveda, is one of the profound and significant Upaniṣads of the Vedic tradition. Its teachings contain subtle philosophical meanings that occupy an important place in the Vedānta tradition.

According to the traditional account, when Śrīmad Ānandatīrtha Bhagavatpāda (Śrī Madhvācārya) was still known as **Vāsudeva**, He studied under a revered teacher named Toṭantillāya. While the teacher was teaching Vāsudeva the Aitareya Upaniṣad, discussions arose concerning the interpretation and deeper meanings of its passages. On these occasions, Vāsudeva revealed the profound meaning and philosophical insights contained in the Upaniṣad. Through the knowledge of these deeper meanings, the teacher developed a liberating devotion to Śrī Govinda.

The purport of the Aitareya Upaniṣad is particularly subtle and profound. Its deeper meanings are considered more esoteric than those of many other Upaniṣads. In his Bhāṣya on the Aitareya Upaniṣad, Śrīmad Ānandatīrtha Bhagavatpāda explains these profound meanings with the support of ancient lexicons, traditional interpretations, and authoritative commentaries.
